Are you looking to move to South America and unsure of what some of the best cities to live in might be? Between safety, affordability, internet accessibility, history, and opportunities there are a ton of cities to decide between. I want to give you a list of 5 of the best places to live in South America. I give you information on each city, the history, the restaurants, and more!
The streets of La Paz are like no other city. With beautiful markets filled with handmade items and home-grown foods this city will take your breath away. The architecture here is like no other city with Gothic style and concrete blocks combined to create a city of enchantment. Not only are there amazing food markets, but you’ll also want to visit the witches’ market with bizarre and gruesome items to purchase. If you live in La Paz to save time on commuting the city has created the world’s highest cable car network. This saves an hour of traffic and commutes workers within 10 minutes. You will have a view of the city and surrounding areas that you can’t beat! This is one city you won’t be bored in.
2. Cusco, Peru
Right outside of Machu Picchu and once one of the capitals of the Inca empire, Cusco brings you back to ancient times with architecture and history. Considered one of the birthplaces of the world, this city is rich in history for those of you that enjoy walking and tours of the olden days. If you want to see the city from the top, one of the best ways to do this is by taking a 45-minute walk to the Inca ruins Sacsayhuaman. You will be able to see that the shape of the city is a panther prancing with the head being Sacsayhuaman. You’ll also be able to visit Machu Picchu and spend the day with some fun llamas. Cusco is a fun city with great nightlife, restaurants, street vendors, and a great cost of living.
One of the most beautiful cities in South America, Quito has a stunning setting between two active volcanoes. Awarded the first UNESCO World Heritage city in 1978 the city was originally part of the Inca empire. Colonial architecture between the volcanoes gives a magnificent view of the snow-capped peaks. If you want the best views of the mountains take the TelefériQo and gondola for views of the Pichincha Volcano. If you want to go to the Galapago Islands a quick way to get there is from Quito. The cost of living here is very affordable at an average of $1,100/month of less. The city is amazing to foreigners if you aren’t from a Spanish speaking country – and it is a rather safe city!
This city is one on the way up to the top in South America. A bustling city, Santiago is one of the best places to live in South America. There are more
restaurants than one can count, now being called the Next Great Food City. Many of these restaurants use local farmers and ingredients to create their Chilean delicacies. If you enjoy food then this is the city for you! With different Barrios welcoming different types ofbars, restaurants, and shops you won’t want to miss out on the history of each neighborhood. Don’t forget that you can perfectly see the Andes Mountains from the city. Head to Parque Metropolitano for the best views of the city and mountains!
While this isn’t in South America this is still one of the best cities to live in. Growing with tons of expats and universities, Mexico City has grown over the past decade. The cost of living is very affordable, usually spending less than $30 a week on groceries – and getting some of the freshest food possible. The history and culture in Mexico City is extremely rich like many other cities I’ve mentioned. Being a part of the Aztec empire and other cultures there is a cross of many different architectural structures and cultures. With museums and tours all day long you can learn about the multiple civilizations that have ruled in Mexico. If you move to Mexico make sure you travel about the country. Read my blog here on the cities you need to visit in Mexico.
Still debating which city to live in? I know it can be difficult to decide between 5 beautiful cities. Giving you a list of the 5 best places to live in South America I hope to help you find the city that is right for you! If you are looking to take a vacation in Mexico check out Rocky Point! From hotels, beach activities, and so much more Rocky Point is one of the best cities in Mexico. Contact me if you are looking for a condo, apartment, or home in Puerto Peñasco!
